DD Malayalam is an Indian channel operated by Doordarshan, India's national broadcaster, and airs Malayalam language programs. It was the first Malayalam channel to ever starts its broadcasting. The channel was officially launched on 1 January 1985 at Tagore Centenary Hall, Thiruvananthapuram by the then Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran.
Owned by Prasad Bharati, the channel is one among the 11 Indian regional language channels operated by Doordarshan. During the early days, the channel telecasts in Malayalam for only 70 minutes from 6.30 PM to 7.40 PM.
DD Malayalam's Oru Koottam Urumbal, a 15 minutes children play, was the first-ever aired television program in Malayalam. The first-ever Malayalam news bulletin, which was presented by G R Kannan, was aired at 7.30 PM on 2 January 1985.
Oru Poo Viriyunnu, written and directed by Eravi Gopalan, A. Anwar, and P.K. Mohanan, is the first-ever teleserial in Malayalam. The teleserial which was aired in 1990 was co-produced by Doordarshan and UNICEF.
